We started with one pattern, one hide and one rule: nothing leaves the table until it can be worn every day for a decade.
The first bag took eleven attempts. We kept the eleventh because it was the only one that still looked right after a year of being carried.
Plate 01 — the original pattern, still in use.
34 × 22 × 12 CMFour suppliers turned us down for ordering too little. The fifth let us watch the drums turn for three days, and we have bought from nobody else since.
Plate 02 — vegetable tanned hides, week six.
1.4 MM THICKNESSA bag should look better the year after you buy it than the day you did.
We cap every run at forty. When the run closes the pattern goes back in the drawer, and the next one starts from a blank sheet.

I very nearly cancelled the order the night before it shipped, because I could not believe a bag at this price would look like the photographs. It arrived better than the photographs. The leather has that quiet smell you only get from the real thing, and three months of daily use has left it looking softer, not shabbier. My only complaint is that I now want it in black as well.
I bought this for my daughter's graduation and kept it hidden for two weeks, which was agony because I wanted to carry it myself. The stitching is dead straight, the hardware does not rattle, and the strap sits properly on the shoulder instead of sliding off the way my last three bags did. She cried. I may have too.
Practical review from someone who is hard on their things. I commute an hour each way, I overfill everything, and I have ruined good bags in under a year. This one has survived a full winter of rain and a laptop it was probably never meant to hold. The corners still hold their shape. I have stopped babying it, which is the highest compliment I give.
The delivery took a little longer than I expected and I did email to ask where it was. Someone actually replied the same day, with a real answer, not a copied paragraph. The bag came two days later, wrapped like something precious. I am keeping this note honest: the wait tested me, the bag and the service more than made up for it.
My husband can never think of what to get me and this year he simply asked the shop for help. Whoever answered him steered him to the tan rather than the black, said it would suit more of what I wear, and they were right. I have had compliments from strangers on the train. I do not usually write reviews. I made an exception.
I will be honest, I ordered two and sent one back, because I could not decide between the sizes online. The return was painless, which is rare, and no one made me feel guilty for it. The one I kept has become the bag I reach for without thinking. That is the real test, isn't it. Not the unboxing. The Tuesday morning.
